The Master/s: On the
Contemporary Structures of Power

Ljubljana, Cankarjev dom, September 22-24, 2022

The Master/s conference will focus on the figure of the Master, whose presence goes back to the prehistoric times and the beginnings of our culture, and has haunted human history for millennia, manifesting itself in new forms and posing new challenges. How and why were some able to acquire the status of a master, which allowed them to have unshakeable power over others, and where did the aura that supposedly belonged to them come from? How and why did others submit unconditionally and agree to their subordination? These and many other questions will be addressed and discussed at the conference, which will take place at Cankarjev Dom, Ljubljana.

The one is independent, and its essential nature is to be for itself; the other is dependent, and its essence is life or existence for another. The former is the Master, or Lord, the latter the Bondsman.
